The final Dearness Allowance (DA) hike for central government employees and pensioners will come in September 2025. This increase will apply from July 1, 2025. It is good news for many people as prices are rising and the 8th Pay Commission is not yet implemented. Around 48 lakh employees and 60 lakh pensioners will benefit from this rise in their monthly income and festival spending.
Expected DA Rate and Announcement Timeline
As per recent Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) data, the DA is expected to increase by 3 percent. The current rate is 55 percent, and it may go up to 58 percent. The official announcement will likely happen at the end of September or in early October during Navratri or Diwali.
Employees and pensioners will also get arrears for July, August, and September. Once the Union Cabinet gives approval, the revised salary will be paid along with these arrears.
Why DA Hike is Important
DA is given to help employees and pensioners manage their cost of living. Prices of daily items often increase due to inflation, and DA helps cover that extra cost. The government revises DA two times every year, in January and July, based on CPI-IW.
The formula used under the 7th Pay Commission is:
DA (%) = [(Average CPI-IW for 12 months – 261.42) ÷ 261.42] × 100
This formula ensures that salaries and pensions remain fair with current market prices.
Impact on Salary and Pension
The DA hike will increase the take-home pay of employees and pensioners. For example, an employee earning a basic salary of ₹18,000 will get an extra ₹540 after the 3 percent hike. This will make his total monthly salary ₹10,440.
For pensioners, a basic pension of ₹9,000 will get a hike of ₹270. This will make the total monthly pension ₹14,220.
